Dangerous dust on sites is becoming an increasingly serious issue, as employers are failing to adequately protect their employees. Consequently, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) are targeting construction sites with a plan to make these working conditions safer.

Since October 4th, and throughout the course of the month, inspectors will be attending more than 1000 sites around the country to check the safety standards, or thereby lack of standards and precautions in place.

They are primarily focusing on dust from silica (the dust product when bricks and stones are cut), asbestos and wood.

Exposure to dust can be fatal, especially as it targets the lungs, leading to breathing problems and even terminal diseases. Even years after exposure, dust can have subsequent implications for workers’ health. According to the HSE around 500 workers die every year, as a result of exposure to silica dust.

The health and safety of workers is the employer’s responsibility, they have a duty to protect their employees. Therefore, checks will be taking place across all sites, regardless of the size of the project.

The smallest changes can have an impact on the protection of workers. The ways to reduce the risk of harmful dust include:

  • On-tool dust extraction
  • Watering down cutting areas
  • Wearing a suitable mask
