Did you know that April 28th marks World Health and Safety Day at Work?

On this date every year, the International Labour Organization observes the ‘World Day for Safety and Health at Work’, focusing on an appropriate theme associated with occupational safety and health.

As Health, Safety and CDM advisers, and experts within the industry, we’re going to be discussing the significance of this day, and why it is a fundamental right for all people, no matter their work.

At Saxon Safety, we believe that our job is to help your business thrive. One of the ways we can do this is by educating you on your roles and responsibilities, and on this upcoming day, there’s no better time to do so.

The importance of World Day for Safety and Health at Work

This day has annually been observed since 2003. The United Nations notes that:

“This celebration is an integral part of the Global Strategy on Occupational Safety and Health of the ILO, as documented in the Conclusions of the International Labour Conference in June 2003. One of the main pillars of the Global Strategy is advocacy, the World Day for Safety and Health at Work is a significant tool to raise awareness of how to make work safe and healthy and of the need to raise the political profile of occupational safety and health.”

Together, we can move forward and promote a strong health and safety culture across all workplaces.

This years theme: The Impacts of Climate Change

This year is focusing on the impacts of climate change, and how changing weather patterns and conditions can affect worker health and safety.

Some of these risks include: heat stress, UV radiation, air pollution, major industrial accidents, extreme weather events, an increase in vector-borne diseases and increased exposure to chemicals (source: ILO).

Something to think about?

Each of us is responsible for our own health and safety, but the proper precautions have to be put in place, and have to be accessible within the workplace. However, new and emerging risks are starting to come to light, and will need extensive education to see what lasting effects there are, and the implications they will have on our day-to-day actions regarding health and safety.

This is something to think about on this upcoming day!
