Binley Farm

Oak framed house and terraced cottage development.

About

Saxon Safety was appointed as Health, Safety and CDM advisors by GR Cousins, to assist them with their Principal Contractor duties.

The project consisted of the construction of an impressive oak framed family home with garage, workshop and landscaping, and also 3 terraced cottages to provide more housing in the Village of Binley.

  • Carried out an initial site survey, discussing the key site issues and constraints.
  • Submitted the F10 to the HSE.
  • Wrote and updated the construction phase plan.
  • Carried out a Fire Risk Assessment and kept it updated as the project progressed.
  • Produced risk assessments and method statements for the principal contractor's works.
  • We carried out regular site audits.
  • We advised on O+M manuals and health and safety files.

Challenges

Maintaining fire safety is always critical in any construction project, especially when there are lots of timber components going in. We made sure this was thoroughly risk assessed, and that the site complied with the Loss Prevention Council Joint Code of Practice.

There was a power line running over a corner of the site, so we made sure the GS6 hierarchy of controls were in place.

Seeing this project take shape over the 14 months it was on site was exciting, the oak features, double-height hallway and the way glass was used created some spectacular views and really set the property apart, and the cottages were well designed. They will provide some much needed additional housing for the village.
